A Complete Guide to Banking Recruitment in India

If you look at the track record of competitive exams, banking recruitments are highly popular because they are completely transparent and follow a strict annual calendar. If you plan your preparation around the core sections—Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning, English, and Banking Awareness—you can target multiple bank exams simultaneously.

Which Major Exams Come Under Banking Jobs?

Most government and public sector bank recruitments are handled by three primary bodies. Here is the breakdown of the major exams you can target:

Step-by-Step Selection & Joining Process

The recruitment process in banking is highly systematic and completely computerized:

  1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims): A 1-hour online screening test consisting of Speed Maths/Quant, Reasoning, and English. It is purely qualifying in nature, meaning these marks are not counted in the final merit list.

  2. Main Examination (Mains): A comprehensive online exam with higher-level questions, adding Data Interpretation and General/Banking Awareness sections. For officer-level posts (PO), a short Descriptive English Test (Essay & Letter Writing) is typed on the screen immediately after the objective test.

  3. Interview / Language Proficiency Test:

    • For PO posts, a personal interview (and sometimes group exercises, like in SBI) is conducted.

    • For Clerical posts, there is no interview. Instead, you must clear a Local Language Proficiency Test (LPT) if you applied from a state whose official language you didn't study in Class 10/12.

  4. Document Verification & Provisional Allotment: Based on combined Mains and Interview marks (for PO) or pure Mains marks (for Clerk), a merit list is drawn, and banks send out provisional allotment letters.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. What is the minimum educational percentage required to apply for Bank exams?
Answer: For the vast majority of banking exams like SBI Clerk, IBPS Clerk, and IBPS PO, you only need a pass degree (Graduation) in any stream from a recognized university. There is no minimum percentage barrier. However, elite exams like RBI Grade B usually require a minimum of 60% marks in Graduation.
Q2. Can final year students apply for SBI PO and IBPS PO?
Answer: Yes, final year students can apply provisionally for SBI PO, provided they can produce absolute proof of passing their graduation exam by the specified deadline mentioned in the official notification. For IBPS PO, generally, your final results must be officially out before the online registration window closes.
Q3. Is there a limit on the number of attempts for bank exams?
Answer: For IBPS exams (PO/Clerk) and SBI Clerk, there is no limit on attempts; you can apply as long as you fall within the eligible age group. However, for SBI PO, there is a restriction: General/EWS candidates get a maximum of 4 attempts, while OBC candidates get 7 attempts.
Q4. Is there negative marking in banking exams?
Answer: Yes, both Bank Prelims and Mains exams have a negative marking system. For every wrong answer, 1/4th (0.25) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted. Skipping a question results in zero deduction.
