Step-by-Step Selection & Joining Process

Most railway recruitments follow a transparent, multi-stage structure. Knowing the path helps you prepare step-by-step:

  1. Computer-Based Test (CBT 1 & CBT 2): Your initial objective exam testing Maths, Reasoning, and General Awareness. Some technical posts also test your core engineering branch in CBT 2.

  2. Skill / Aptitude Test (If Applicable): Posts like Station Master and ALP require a Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT). Typing posts will require a typing speed test.

  3. Document Verification (DV): Once you clear the merit cut-off, you are called to verify your certificates.

  4. Detailed Medical Examination (DME): Railways is very strict about medical fitness (especially vision standards like A-1, B-1, etc., depending on safety categories).

  5. Final Merit & Training: Selected candidates receive their call letters and are sent for mandatory training before final posting at their allotted zones.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. What is the age limit for RRB Railway jobs?
Answer: For undergraduate and Group D posts, the age limit is generally 18 to 30 years. For graduate-level posts (like NTPC Graduate, JE), it is 18 to 33 or 36 years. Age relaxations of 3 years for OBC-NCL and 5 years for SC/ST candidates are provided as per government rules.
Q2. Can a 10th pass student apply for Railway jobs?
Answer: Yes, 10th pass students are eligible for RRB Group D (Level 1) vacancies and certain RPF Constable posts. However, for technical wings in Group D or ALP, an ITI certificate or National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) along with the 10th mark sheet is often required.
Q3. How many railway zones can a candidate apply for in a single notification?
Answer: A candidate can apply to only one RRB Zone in a specific Centralized Employment Notice (CEN). Submitting multiple applications across different zones for the same notification will lead to your application being rejected completely.
Q4. Is there negative marking in RRB exams?
Answer: Yes, there is a negative marking of 1/3rd (0.33) mark for every incorrect answer in the Computer-Based Tests (CBT) conducted by RRB. There is no negative marking during the psycho/aptitude test (CBAT) stage.
